"Transmyocardial Revascularization"
or
"Laser Heart Surgery"
Some patients have
coronary artery blockage and disabling angina, but are not
candidates for coronary artery bypass surgery. This is usually
because the arteries that are blocked are too small to bypass. TMR
or Laser Heart Surgery allows surgeons to create new channels of
blood flow in the heart muscle using the laser. This can be done
in combination with bypass to other arteries or it can be done
alone. The procedure can sometimes be done without the need for
cardiopulmonary bypass or the "pump". The surgeons at
Cardiothoracic Surgery of Savannah can provide this procedure to
those patients with angina who have no other treatment options.
If your physician
recommends surgery, be sure to ask about TMR (Laser Heart Surgery)
as an option.
